A wall of mud came sliding down in the Maggie Valley area of Haywood County Friday night forcing the evacuation of at least 40 people.
It happened on Rich Cove Road which leads up to Ghost Town in the Sky. No injuries have been reported. At least four homes were in the path of the slide, including one that was damaged. Rescue officials are using all terrain vehicles to survey the area.
The Red Cross intially set up an emergency shelter at a nearby church but evacuees have since been placed in hotels or they are staying with family.
Emergency officials are waiting until daylight to get a better look at the total damage.
