Three military units in the WNC Mountains are deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan soon. The 357th Army Reserve unit will leave in late March and spend more than a year building roads overseas. News 13 spoke with two young families preparing to deal with the long separation and the challenge of keeping dad involved in their children's lives. Both the O'Conner family and the Barrett family say they will rely on family, friends, and the latest technology like Skype to get them through.

The 105th National Guard Military Police Unit in Asheville and the 163rd Area Support Medical Company in East Flat Rock will also be deploying overseas soon.
